1936

It all started here

Our founder, Dugald McGhee, started as a van salesman, dreaming of feeding Maryhill. He opened a small bakery on Springbank Street, slinging fresh rolls to the local punters.

1937

Oran Street opens

Our first shop opened on Oran Street in Glasgow’s Maryhill – no frills, just fresh rolls, good instincts, and a knack for consistency that would serve us well..

1944

Wartime called

Despite wartime shortages of sugar, we kept baking! McGhee’s helped fuel Glasgow through some tough times.

1954

Family takes the helm

Glasgow’s appetite grew, and so did we! Dugald’s sons – Jim, Calder, Douglas, and Gavin – became directors.

1962

Now we’re really growing

Our reputation for quality and consistency meant the McGhee name became a trusted one. We were a part of morning routines, with rolls delivered fresh across the city.

1968

On the move again

We moved to our first purpose-built premises on Murano Street. We were feelin’ fancy.

1969

Embracing tech

Even in the late ’60s, we were innovators. Our Murano Street bakery featured an “electronic eye” for automatic despatch doors. Pretty fancy, eh?

1981

Potato scone pizza!

We launched our unique “tattie scone pizza.” A truly iconic McGhee’s creation that made headlines.

1989

Our first acquisition

Business was booming! We made our first acquisition, welcoming Margaret Kelly Bakers into the McGhee family.

1990

Aisling’s grand entrance

Aisling was born! Dad joked her first stop after the hospital was the bakery – proof of our family’s dedication, even on day one.

1992

The 3rd generation take the helm

We even debated a new slogan: “Family-run since forever – arguments resolved by who makes the best rolls!

1997

Fergusons joined us

We welcomed Fergusons in Kilmarnock, expanding our reach (and our delicious offerings).

1998

Supermarket shelves beckon

We made our first foray into supermarkets, supplying William Low (now Tesco) and bringing McGhee’s to even more homes.

2005

New home in Port Dundas

After huge investment, we moved to our current home in Port Dundas. More space, better systems, more room for trophies.

2007

Fit for a Queen

We baked thousands of strawberry tarts for the Queen’s Garden Party at Holyrood. Tell that to your granny.

2008

Up to Dundee

Wallace Family Bakers in Dundee joined us, making confectionery a much bigger, and sweeter, part of our business.

2009

Next up, Ayrshire

Lamond the Baker in Ayrshire joined the family. Plus, our memorable (and slightly questionable) tagline debuted: “Geez McGhee’s!”

2011

Unforgettable jingles!

Our first real marketing push gave us jingles you couldn’t forget! The “Good Morning” jingle on Clyde One even replaced the primary school assembly song.

2014

Commonwealth Games feat

We baked thousands of pizza Danish pastries for the Glasgow Games. Fueling athletes and fans alike. Maybe it’s time for a comeback?

2015

Scottish Baker of the Year!

We were proudly awarded Scottish Baker of the Year. Mic-dropped at the ceremony. (We didn’t).

2016

More recognition! We were named Family Business of the Year, celebrating our rich heritage and ability to get on for 80-odd years.
