From Apprentice to Head of Engineering
Gordon joined McGhee’s Bakery in May 2024 as a bakery engineer.
Just over a year later, he stepped into the role of Head of Engineering, leading the team responsible for keeping production running smoothly across the company’s bakery sites.
Now 27, Gordon oversees a seven-strong engineering team who maintain the equipment behind the bakery’s much-loved products – from morning rolls and potato scones to empire biscuits.
It’s a role that requires quick thinking and strong technical knowledge.
“We have a huge variety of individual machines across different production lines running 24/7, so no two days are the same.”
Gordon began his career as an apprentice engineer, learning his trade through hands-on experience and developing a deep understanding of industrial machinery.
That practical background has proved invaluable in the fast-paced environment of a large-scale bakery operation.
“It’s a big responsibility, but in many ways it feels like what I was born to do.”
One of the things Gordon noticed immediately when he joined McGhee’s was the hands-on approach of the leadership team.
“The directors are on the floor all day, every day. Seeing that level of commitment makes you want to match it.”
For Gordon, stepping into the Head of Engineering role represents both a personal milestone and an opportunity to play a key part in the future of a bakery that has been serving Scotland for generations.
“Everyone takes pride in what they do here. Being part of that and helping keep everything running is something I’m really proud of.”
