Kaddy on moving from Barcelona to Possilpark and finding her place at the bakery

Kaddy moved from Barcelona to Scotland four years ago looking for a change. Today, the 27-year-old from Possilpark is a team leader in the packing department at McGhee’s Bakery, helping coordinate one of the busiest parts of the operation.

Kaddy first came to Scotland to visit her sister.

“I’d been in Spain my whole life,” she says. “My sister was living here and said, ‘Why don’t you come and visit for a week?’ So I came to Glasgow and I really liked it.”

After returning to Spain, she began sending out CVs from home. One of the first responses came from McGhee’s.

“I moved over and came for an interview,” she recalls. “That was in June 2022, just after Covid.”

Kaddy started on the production floor working on the hot plates, flipping potato scones.

“I started in the summer, which was very warm,” she laughs. “I thought it would be the hardest job, but it wasn’t as bad as I expected.”

From there she moved into confectionery before joining the packing department, where she spent two years learning the role before moving into the label room. Last year she was promoted to team leader.

Today, much of her day revolves around organisation and communication across the production floor.

“I print all the labels for the boxes and make sure the packing team know what needs to be done for the day,” she explains. “You have to make sure the right boxes go to the right people and that production has everything they need.”

It’s a job that requires constant teamwork.

“You have to talk to everyone,” she says. “People might think it’s simple, but there’s a lot of communication. You’re speaking to the packing team, the production side and the production office. Everyone needs to know what’s happening.”

For Kaddy, the people are the best part of the job.

“They’re so funny,” she says. “Everyone’s always joking and helping each other. There’s always a lot of laughing.”

Before joining the bakery, she had no idea how well known the brand was across Scotland.

“When I came here I didn’t really know what McGhee’s was,” she says. “But when you tell people outside work that you work here, they know it straight away. They love the rolls.”

Her favourite product is a classic from the bakery counter.

“The Chocolate Old School,” she says. “It’s so good.”

One of her proudest moments came when she was promoted to team leader.

“It meant more responsibility but also more contact with people,” she says. “I got to meet new people across the business and speak to more teams.”

Outside work, Kaddy enjoys walking and exploring new places whenever the Scottish weather allows.

“I love going for walks and seeing new places,” she says.

For anyone considering joining McGhee’s, she has simple advice.

“Come and experience it,” she says.
